An Iranian fighter jet flew towards a US surveillance drone but then went away after a warning flare was fired, according to the Pentagon.
The unarmed Predator drone was being escorted by two military aircraft, one of which released the flare to warn the pilot.
Pentagon press secretary George Little said the Iranian F-4 plane came as close as 16 miles to the drone before it broke away.
Mr Little said the Predator was conducting what he called a "routine classified" surveillance mission in the Arabian Gulf on Tuesday.
He added the three US aircraft remained over international waters at all times.
In November an Iranian fighter fired upon, but did not hit, a Predator over the Gulf.
After that episode, the US told Iran they would continue surveillance flights over international waters "consistent with long-standing practice and our commitment to the security of the region".
Mr Little added: "We also communicated that we reserve the right to protect our military assets as well as our forces and will continue to do so going forward."
