Pro-Putin Biker Gang Spark Anger Over Ride

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

A Russian biker gang loyal to President Vladimir Putin is planning to ride through Europe to mark the end of the Second World War, triggering anger in Poland.

Plans by the ultra-nationalistic Night Wolves motorcycle club to retrace the westward route taken by Soviet troops to Berlin have been branded a "provocation" by Warsaw.

The rally comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the crisis in Ukraine, which have fuelled fears of Moscow's wider territorial ambitions.

The two-week, 3,728 mile ride will pass through Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and finish in the German capital on 9 May.

The biker gang's website states "To Berlin" - a reference to the Red Army's famous battle cry.

Islamic State Threatening Iraqi City Of Ramadi

Islamic State has captured three villages near the Iraqi provincial capital of Ramadi and is feared to be closing in on the city.

The militant group took the villages of Sjariyah, Albu-Ghanim and Soufiya, in Anbar province, which had been under government control, residents said.

It represents a setback for government forces, which two weeks ago were able to regain control of Tikrit.

Residents of the villages told the AP news agency fighting was taking place on the eastern edges of Ramadi, about 2km away from a local government building.

In Soufiya, the militants bombed a police station and took over a power plant.

The residents said Iraqi troops battling the militants were being backed up by airstrikes.

At around midday on Wednesday, militants opened another front with government troops at three other villages, to the northeast of Ramadi.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al Abadi is currently in Washington, where he has met President Barack Obama and appealed for greater support from the US-led coalition carrying out airstrikes against the militants.

At least 43 people have been killed in a spate of militant attacks in the last few days.

Iraqi state TV said troops have started a large-scale operation to recapture areas beyond Tikrit.

Islamic State swept through key areas in the north and west of Iraq last year seizing about a third of the country including Mosul.

The group has also previously captured large areas in neighbouring Syria and threatened the Kurdish city of Irbil.

After its forces were ejected from Tikrit, Iraqi forensic teams exhumed the remains of up to 1,700 soldiers killed as militants overran the city.

Eurostar: Paris Attacks Hit Passenger Numbers

Eurostar has reported passenger numbers have been hit in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris in January.

The cross-Channel rail service said sales revenues in its first quarter were 6% down on the same period a year ago.

It blamed not only disruption caused by the shootings in France, which included the attack on the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine, but also delays and cancellations forced on it by a lorry fire.

Passenger numbers were flat at 2.3 million.

The company expressed confidence that the performance was a blip.

"The uplift in business travel bookings that was reported in 2014 has continued in the first three months of the year with the number of Eurostar Business Premier travellers increasing by 7% compared with the first quarter of last year," it said in a statement.

"The increase in business passengers which was underpinned last year by the recovery in the UK economy is now starting to take hold on the continent.

"This trend is testament to the increasing  enthusiasm among business customers for choosing the ease of high speed rail over plane and the growing attraction of the Eurostar Business Premier offer.

Sales revenues in the first quarter were impacted by the events in January and by movements in exchange rates.

"The first three months of 2015 saw the average exchange rate increase by 11% compared with the same quarter the previous year, with sterling rising to a seven year high of €1.37.

"As a result, Eurostar sales revenues were down by 6% compared to 2014 (at) £215m.

"Whilst January was challenging, trading returned to a more normalised pattern in the course of the quarter.

"Eurostar reported high levels of traffic during a record Easter holiday period and the company is seeing a strong year-on-year increase in forward bookings for the summer period."

White House To Take Cuba Off Terrorism List

White House To Take Cuba Off Terrorism List

US President Barack Obama will remove Cuba from a list of state sponsors of terrorism, the White House says, as relations between the two countries continue to thaw.

He notified Congress of the long-awaited decision a week after meeting his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas.

The handshake in Panama was the first such formal interaction between the leaders of the former Cold War adversaries in more than a half a century.

Cuba's removal from the list will take effect within 45 days unless US lawmakers raise a joint resolution against the measure, which is deemed unlikely.

While the move will ease some economic sanctions on the communist-run island, the broader US embargo on Cuba will stay in place as only Congress can end that.

Hundreds Of Migrants Feared Drowned Off Libya

Some 400 illegal migrants may have drowned when their boat capsized off the coast of Libya on Sunday, according to survivors who were rescued and brought to Italy.

Those rescued claimed the vessel was carrying between 500 and 550 people trying to make their way to Europe when it sank.

Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the International Organisation for Migration, said between 144 and 150 survivors arrived on Tuesday at Reggio Calabria in southern Italy after being picked up by the Italian coastguard.

"We are continuing to investigate in order to understand how the shipwreck happened," he said.

There has been a suggestion the boat may have capsized after passengers began moving around when they saw the Italian rescue team approach.

The Italian coastguard says it has recovered nine bodies.

"There were 400 victims in this shipwreck, which occurred 24 hours after (their vessel) left the Libyan coast," the charity Save the Children said in a statement, citing survivors.

"There were several young males, probably minors, among the victims," the statement continued, adding there were also children among the survivors.

Speaking to Sky News, Save the Children spokeswoman Carlotta Bellini said: "The situation in Libya is really bad.

"Many migrants, including many children, have been victims of violence and many of them have reached Italy over the past few days.

"They have mentioned that extremism and violence on migrants is growing (in Italy).

"They are being transferred to a migrant centre in northern Italy."

Hundreds Of Pearl Harbor Dead To Be Exhumed

The remains of 388 Americans killed during the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor during World War Two are to be exhumed for DNA testing.

Most of the crew on board the torpedoed USS Oklahoma could not be identified after Japan's surprise attack - a pivotal moment which convinced the US to enter the war.

Their remains were interred at Hawaii's National Memorial Cemetery but now the Pentagon plans to transfer them to a Defense Department lab on the island to hopefully bring closure to some families.

Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work said the government remained "committed to fulfilling its sacred obligation to achieve the fullest possible accounting for US personnel lost in past conflicts".

"Recent advances in forensic science and technology, as well as family member assistance in providing genealogical information, have now made it possible to make individual identifications for many service members long-buried in graves marked 'unknown,'" said Mr Work.

"While not all families will receive an individual identification, we will strive to provide resolution to as many families as possible."

For the exhumation to happen, Government rules state there must be a chance of identifying at least 60% of the troops. Family members of the dead crew are set to provide samples to help the process.

Some 429 sailors and Marines on the USS Oklahoma died in the attack on 7 December 1941.

In all, Japan's two-hour airborne onslaught destroyed eight battleships and 164 planes - more than a 100 other vessels were also sunk or damaged.

But it was the deaths of more than 2,400 serviceman and civilians on home soil that truly shocked the US and led President Roosevelt to famously declare it "a day that will live in infamy".

Kidnapped Nigeria Girls Still Missing A Year On

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 14 April 2015 | 14.59

By Alex Crawford, Sky News Special Correspondent

It is 12 months since the kidnap of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls captured the world's attention - they remain unaccounted for and it is increasingly clear Boko Haram is still abducting hundreds more women.

Campaign group BringBackOurGirls says it has evidence some of the group were seen in the town of Gwoza in northeast Nigeria, until recently the main operational base of the militant terror group.

Nothing concrete has been heard of them since.

Even after the Nigerian military entered the town and claimed to have retaken it - a week before the country went to the polls - there has been little news of exactly what was found there.

Nigeria's new president told Sky News last month - in his first interview after it became clear he was going to be the country's next leader- that cracking down on Boko Haram and recovering the schoolgirls was his top priority.

But he warned parents not to be overly optimistic.

"We will do our best," President-elect Muhammadu Buhari told us from his Abuja residence.

A report by human rights group Amnesty International says at least 2,000 women and girls have been abducted by Boko Haram since the start of 2014.

Many of them are forced into sexual slavery - and also trained to fight.

One young woman who was kidnapped then forced into marriage told Amnesty she was repeatedly raped and sexually abused.

She said she had been taught how to use weapons and forced to take part in Boko Haram battles - even one against her own village.

Amnesty has documented what it calls multiple war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the extremist group, which recently pledged allegiance to Islamic State.

It commissioned new satellite images, including that of the town of Bama, which showed the level of destruction wrought by Boko Haram as it retreated.

Nearly 6,000 structures can be seen damaged or destroyed - about 70% of the town.

There is more hope than at anytime over the last five years that with the election of a new president there will be fresh impetus and the will to take on the militants - and to try to find some answers for the hundreds of parents still hoping their daughters will be returned.

Deputy Charged Over 'Taser Mix-Up' Killing

By Sky News US Team

A 73-year-old reserve deputy has been charged with manslaughter for shooting dead a man in an alleged mix-up with his Taser.

Robert Bates shot 44-year-old Eric Harris on 2 April while assisting officers in a pursuit of the convicted felon.

Police said Bates thought he was holding a stun gun, not his handgun, when he fired at Harris while officers attempted to restrain him.

Prosecutors in Oklahoma filed second-degree manslaughter charges against the reserve deputy.

The charge involves "culpable negligence", Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said in a statement.

Oklahoma law defines culpable negligence as "the omission to do something which a reasonably careful person would do, or the lack of the usual ordinary care and caution in the performance of an act usually and ordinarily exercised by a person under similar circumstances and conditions," Mr Kunzweiler said.

An attorney for Bates did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At the weekend, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office released footage of the incident that was captured by an officer's body camera.

In it, Harris can be seen attempting to flee police before he is tackled to the pavement.

As officers attempt to hold him down, a gunshot is heard, followed by a man purported to be Bates saying, "Oh, I shot him. I'm sorry."

The sheriff's office said Bates dropped the weapon as he fired because he was not expecting it to recoil.

The body cam footage showed someone picking the handgun up off the ground seconds after the shot was fired.

Harris, who was wanted by police for allegedly trying to sell illegal guns to undercover officers, later died in hospital.

The shooting drew comparisons to other police-involved shootings that have sparked national debate of police tactics.

A former police officer in South Carolina is charged with murder for shooting dead a man as he attempted to flee arrest.

A specially-designed robot has become stranded after capturing the first grainy images from inside one of the melted reactors at Japan's doomed Fukushima nuclear plant.

It withstood the deadly radioactive environment but then became stuck two-thirds of the way through its mission and had to be abandoned.

Pictures lit by a lamp on the robot showed steam wafting around the chamber and debris that looked like small rocks and metal parts.

The video also showed numerous white spots believed to be caused by gamma rays.

Despite the glitch, officials said the images were a success and showed it was possible to send in more sophisticated robots as they embark on a 40-year mission to make the plant safe.

Beach Tribute To 13-Year-Old Killed By Shark

Hundreds of people have turned out for a beachfront tribute to a 13-year-old surfer who died in a brutal shark attack.

Elio Canestri had his arms and legs bitten, as well as part of his stomach, while surfing off the Indian Ocean island of Reunion.

Rescuers arrived quickly but could not save him.

A 3.5-metre tiger shark was quickly captured and killed but an examination of the boy's body revealed it was not the animal that killed the boy.

Elio was surfing in an off-limits area introduced after a series of shark attacks around the island.

In July 2013, a 15-year-old girl died after a shark tore her in two while she was snorkelling in a prohibited area.

Authorities banned all water activities outside special areas watched by lifeguards - a measure recently extended to February 2016.

The 13-year-old's death is the 16th shark attack on Reunion since 2011, and the seventh death.

"More than ever, we have to be doubly vigilant and the best way to prevent accidents is to respect the ban," said local police chief Dominique Sorain.

Professional surfer Jeremy Flores, who grew up on Reunion, paid tribute to Elio and posted a photo of him on Instagram.

He wrote: "ANOTHER shark attack in Reunion island this morning. 13 years old Elio was one of our best up and coming surfer. Words can't describe how sad and angry i am. So young !!! Heart breaking News . RIP."

A Facebook tribute page has also been set up, attracting more than 5,000 likes.

'Syria-Bound' Briton To Be Sent Home To UK

One of nine Britons held in Turkey on suspicion of trying to illegally enter Syria is being flown back to the UK, Sky News understands.

Waheed Ahmed - the son of Rochdale councillor Shakil Ahmed - will fly from Dalaman into Birmingham overnight today, according to Sky sources.

The remaining eight will return on Tuesday, it is understood.

All of the group are from the same family.

Mr Ahmed, 21, was with his aunt, two cousins and one of their wives when they were stopped in Turkey, near the Syrian border. They had four children with them.

Most of the group flew from Manchester on 27 March but Mr Ahmed joined them three days later on a flight from Birmingham.

There were reportedly concerns about his behaviour in the months before he was arrested.

Mohammed Shafiq, who is a friend of Shakil Ahmed, said of Waheed: "There were concerns in the last six months to a year about a change in his behaviour.

"And a change in his attitude towards various different issues."

He also told Sky News: "That was causing concern for people in the community and his family."

Other family members detained include Zareeda Bi, 47, Maboob Yasin, 22, Habib Yasin, 24, Samia Bi, 22, and youngsters aged one, three, eight and 11.

Police are trying to establish their reason for travelling to the Syrian border.

The Foreign Office said it did not comment on individual cases.

Officers have searched at least five homes in the Manchester area, including that of the Labour councillor.

Cllr Ahmed said he thought his son had been in Birmingham on a work placement when he discovered that he had been detained in Turkey.

Islamic State militants have continued their spree of destroying ancient cities and treasures across Iraq, this time targeting Nimrud.

The video posted online appears to show the terror group's fighters smashing artefacts in the ancient Assyrian city before blowing up the site.

Militants can be seen ripping large barrels filled with powder in a room where the walls are lined with gypsum slabs, beautifully carved with representations of Assyrian figures.

Nimrud was founded in the 13th century BC and contains one of the most famous archaeological sites in the history of a country often described as the cradle of civilisation.

It was such a special city, in fact, that it was on Unesco's tentative list of world heritage sites.
